EVA hot melt adhesive film and TPU hot melt adhesive film are both types of hot melt adhesive film and are environmentally friendly adhesives. EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer) hot melt adhesive film and TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) hot melt adhesive film have obvious differences in many aspects, mainly including composition, material properties, application fields and processing characteristics. Let’s take a look with Alster:
Differences Between EVA and TPU Hot Melt Adhesive Film
1. Material composition
- EVA hot melt adhesive film: composed of ethylene and vinyl acetate monomers, with good softness and elasticity, suitable for low-temperature applications.
- TPU hot melt adhesive film: made of thermoplastic polyurethane, with excellent elasticity, wear resistance and chemical resistance.
2. Performance difference
EVA hot melt adhesive film:
- Softness: has good softness and is suitable for bonding soft materials.
- Temperature resistance: poor temperature resistance, generally suitable for low to medium temperature applications.
- Waterproofness: has certain waterproof properties, but poor moisture and heat resistance.
- Transparency: usually translucent to opaque.
TPU hot melt adhesive film:
- Elasticity and ductility: More elastic than EVA, suitable for bonding materials that require high tensile properties.
- Temperature resistance: Better high temperature resistance, usually suitable for a wider temperature range.
- Wear resistance and chemical resistance: More wear-resistant than EVA, and better resistant to erosion by oils, chemicals and other substances.
- Transparency: It can be completely transparent, suitable for applications that require high transparency.
3. Application fields
EVA hot melt adhesive film
- Suitable for low temperature environments, such as bonding of paper and fabrics, widely used in footwear, textiles, clothing and other fields.
- Suitable for applications that do not require high transparency, such as bonding of materials such as wood and plastics.
TPU hot melt adhesive film:
- Due to its high elasticity and durability, it is widely used in high-demand occasions such as sportswear, seamless underwear, shoe materials, automotive interiors, electronic products, etc.
- Suitable for applications that require high wear resistance, anti-yellowing and high transparency, such as mobile phone cases, glass decorations, automotive interiors, etc.
4. Processing characteristics
EVA hot melt adhesive film
- Low melting point: The processing temperature is usually between 70℃-100℃, which is easier to process and shape.
- Weak water resistance: When used for clothing, more washing times will affect its bonding effect.
TPU hot melt adhesive film:
- High melting point: The processing temperature is usually between 110℃-150℃, suitable for applications requiring high temperature resistance.
- Strong water resistance: Suitable for products that need to be washed repeatedly, such as seamless clothing, sportswear, etc.
5. Price difference
- EVA hot melt adhesive film: Usually the price is low, suitable for low-cost applications. The main component of EVA hot melt adhesive film is vinyl acetate, which is also one of the elastomer materials. It has good adhesion to various sponges, PP (polypropylene), EVA foam, wood paper, various rubbers and other materials.
- EVA hot melt adhesive film has a low melting point, most of which range from 60-80℃, and belongs to low-temperature hot melt adhesive film. The disadvantage is that the product has poor water resistance and is rarely used in clothing and other fields. It is mainly suitable for daily necessities and industrial products. The advantage is that the product cost is low.
- TPU hot melt adhesive film: Due to its superior performance, the price is relatively high and it is suitable for high-end or more demanding applications.
EVA hot melt adhesive film is suitable for applications that are cost-sensitive and have relatively low performance requirements, while TPU hot melt adhesive film is suitable for high-end applications that require high elasticity, wear resistance and transparency. The choice of hot melt adhesive film depends mainly on the specific usage scenario and performance requirements.
It is actually impossible to compare which TPU and EVA hot melt adhesive films are better, because the material fields they are applicable to are different. It does not mean that which material is more expensive means it is better. It still depends on the material you intend to bond and the usage. If you intend to use it for clothing, such as the bonding of clothing trademarks, then TPU hot melt adhesive film is definitely more suitable; and if you intend to use it for the bonding of EVA foam in insoles, then EVA hot melt adhesive film is more suitable.
